The Australian Energy Market Operator has pulled out all the stops for a second day running, as extreme heat combined with coal power outages pushed the grid to the edge of its limits in South Australia and Victoria.

Large thermal power units depend on water for cooling. As the ambient temperature rises, the cooling water is too warm, to cool the condensate, making the turbines, less efficient, less output. The article mentions boiler tube leaks, which are an issue and you can run a boiler with a few leaks, for a short period of time. But you lose a lot of expensive boiler feedwater, increasing the plants consumption of water, at a time when the country is already in a state of water stress. Also, of course, if you continue burning with leaky tubes, you are liable to cause more damage, increasing the costs of repair.
More reason, why we need investment in real renewables and local energy generation. Do any Australian sewage treatment plants and farms, employ bio-gas generation?
