Frydenberg hands out Great Barrier Reef death sentence!

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has been sacrificed on the altar of thermal coal exports, said Oliver Yates, Independent candidate for Kooyong

Former Environment Minister, and now Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, has been part of a government that’s seen emissions rise every year, and was the Minister responsible for giving millions of dollars to a fossil fuel backed Reef group without a competitive tender.

Australia’s governments have determined that thermal coal exports, which are the leading cause of global warming, will decimate the Great Barrier Reef.

Reports have shown that the Great Barrier Reef is struggling to recover from successive years of bleaching, caused by global warming, and warming oceans.

Both major political parties, who understand the threats to the Reef from coal pollution, continue to back the Adani coal mine, and triggering the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef.

However, it is the Liberal Party who have championed the mining and burning of thermal coal, and shown callous disregard for the protection of one of Australia’s most valuable environmental assets.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change special report on the impact of global warming of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, found coral reefs were likely to decline between 70% and 90%. If global warming reaches 2°C, more than 99% of coral reefs were projected to decline.

According to science, the only hope for the Reef is to dramatically cut carbon pollution and move to renewable energy.

The Reef, which is one of the natural wonders of the world, also supports a $6 billion tourism industry and 64,000 jobs.

Oliver Yates said, “I want my kids, and their kids, to see the Great Barrier Reef.

“This government has no right to destroy one of the natural wonders of the world.

“The only way that is going to happen is if we immediately start reducing the carbon pollution.”
